New to Triathlons? We’ve Got You Covered!
Starting your first triathlon can feel overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be! We’ve answered the most common beginner questions to help you feel confident and prepared.
1. Do I Need an Expensive Bike?
No! For your first triathlon, any roadworthy bike will do – a road bike, hybrid, or even a mountain bike. Just make sure it’s in good condition and comfortable to ride.
2. What Should I Wear?
Many beginners wear a swimsuit for the swim and then throw on shorts and a shirt for the bike and run. If you want to make transitions easier, a tri-suit (a one-piece designed for swimming, cycling, and running) is a great option.
3. How Do Transitions Work?
A triathlon has two transitions:
T1 (Swim to Bike): Exit the water, dry off, put on your helmet, and grab your bike.
T2 (Bike to Run): Rack your bike, take off your helmet, and start running. Practise transitioning at home to make it smoother on race day.

4. Do I Need to Be a Great Swimmer?
Not at all! Many first-time triathletes are new to swimming. Focus on being comfortable in open water and maintaining a steady pace. If needed, you can always take short breaks by floating or using a breaststroke.
5. What If I’m Slow?
That’s perfectly fine! Triathlons are about personal goals, not speed. At EXSS events, you’ll find a supportive atmosphere where finishing is the real victory.
6. How Do I Train Without Overcommitting?
For beginners, aim for:
2 swim sessions per week
2 bike rides (one longer, one shorter)
2 runs (one easy, one moderate)
A “brick” workout (bike + run back-to-back) This is enough to get you ready without taking over your life.
7. What Do I Eat Before a Race?
Stick to familiar, easy-to-digest foods. A small meal with carbs and protein (like toast with peanut butter or a banana and yoghurt) 1–2 hours before your race works well.
8. How Do I Stay Hydrated?
Drink water regularly during training and sip on an electrolyte drink if you’re sweating a lot. On race day, use the drink stations to stay hydrated.
9. What Happens If I Can’t Finish?
No worries – everyone has tough days. If you need to stop, let race officials know. But remember, most people surprise themselves with what they can achieve!
